Basking in the sun all day by the beach feels great, but neglecting to properly take care of your skin can do some serious damage! Taking care of your skin this summer doesn’t need to be a difficult task. Get into the habit of this daily skin care routine to maintain that flawless, sun-kissed glow without sacrificing your skin’s health!
1. Apply Sunscreen As Needed
Sunscreen helps prevent your skin from being burned by harmful UV rays which can lead to skin cancer. Even during overcast days in the summer, you should be applying some amount of sunscreen. For fairer skin, don’t use anything less than 30 SPF. The higher SPF levels you use, the longer protection you have from the sun. If you are planning on being out all day in direct sunlight, using a higher SPF is always recommended.
2. Drink Lots of Water
Keeping your body hydrated is one of the best ways to ensure your skin stays healthy. Your skin is an organ that needs nourishment. Without enough water, your body will not be able to protect itself against toxins and your skin will start to show this. Be sure to drink at least 8 cups of water every day (8 cups = 64 ounces).
3. Moisturize Your Skin Daily
Moisturizing is another vital way to promote healthy skin. Even though you may not be experiencing the same dry skin you do during winter, your skin is still in need of moisture in the summer. Put on high quality moisturizer twice a day to ensure your skin is staying hydrated.
4. Exfoliate Two Times Per Week
Taking care of your skin also requires taking care of the invisible dead skin cells that start to build up on it. Simply washing your face won’t get rid of these cells. They require some serious exfoliation. Find an exfoliator that matches your complexion and skin’s sensitivity. After a few weeks, you will notice more of a healthy glow.
5. Eat Skin-Protecting Foods
It’s true that you are what you eat, so be sure to eat some skin-friendly foods this summer. Foods with omega-3 fats like fish, avocado, and walnuts contain fatty acids that protect against inflammation in your skin and other organs. Any vegetables that contain the nutrient beta-carotene can also help your skin stay healthy. Sweet potatoes, bell peppers, and carrots are all packed with this vitamin. Working these foods into your daily diet will also show positive skin results.
