What is Botox®?

Botox injections are shots of an injectable used to treat wrinkles. Botox or botulinum toxin Type A, temporarily reduces the area’s underlying muscle activity, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. This injectable can be used for various reasons, most commonly cosmetic or medical reasons.

Your trusted healthcare provider and licensed expert will inject small amounts of Botox into a specific muscle area to smooth wrinkles or treat other medical conditions.

Botox injections block specific chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. The most common use is to reduce the underlying facial muscles activity, but while they ease symptoms, they are not a cure.

What Areas Can Be Treated With Botox?

FDA Approved Areas:

  • Forehead: Temporarily improve the look of moderate to severe forehead lines
  • Eyes: Crow’s feet: the area spreading out from the corners of the eyes
  • Eyebrows: Frown lines: the area between the eyebrows, also called glabellar lines or “elevens”

Off Label Uses (Non-FDA-Approved):

  • Hyperhidrosis: Treatment for excessive sweating
  • Lips Flip: Treatment for areas around the mouth
  • Nose: Bunny Lines: Areas around both sides of the nose.
  • Chin: Pebble Chin: an uneven chin dimpling
  • Neck: Platysmal Bands: Vertical, rope-like neck bands

What Medical Conditions Does Botox Help With?

Botox Injections may also be used to treat medical conditions, including:

  • Hyperhidrosis: Excessive underarm, feet or palm sweating
  • Bruxism: Teeth-grinding or jaw clenching

First and foremost, ensure your healthcare provider has a current list of your medications and supplements. There are certain medications that increase the risk of bruising at the injection site.

Your licensed healthcare provider will use a fine needle to inject small amounts of Botox into the specific treatment area. Botox is an outpatient procedure that typically lasts minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated.

Discomfort is typically mild, and it can take up to 14 days for full effects to be evident. Regarding Botox aftercare, don’t rub or put pressure on the area for 12 hours after treatment, and avoid physical exertion for 24 hours. It’s best to stay upright and avoid lying down for 3-4 hours after the procedure to prevent incorrect settling.

On average, Botox injections last about three to four months, at which time retreatment is recommended. Eventually, muscles can train themselves to contract less, and as a result, treatments may be more spaced out over longer periods of time. Your licensed expert can help you learn how often you should get Botox based on your unique needs.

Benefits of Botox Treatments

Is Botox cosmetic-exclusive? No! In addition to providing a host of cosmetic-related, wrinkle-reducing treatments, Botox can be used medically for pain management.

Botox blocks nerve signals to muscles, causing their activity to reduce temporarily, and this often brings a sense of pain relief to those who suffer from various types of pain or other medical conditions.

Please note: while Botox can be used to improve symptoms of certain medical conditions, we only provide treatment options for Hyperhidrosis and the masseter muscles (related to causes of TMJ).

The effects of Botox are always temporary, but they can last for several months.

Multiple areas can be treated with Botox in one session.

Primarily, Botox treatment areas are focused on the face, the following:

FDA-Approved Uses:

  • Eyebrows
  • Forehead
  • Nose
  • Eyes

Off-Label Use:

  • Lips
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Neck

While some patients experience a stinging sensation during the treatment due to the incredibly fine needle used, this feeling typically only lasts a few seconds or minutes. For most, Botox treatment is relatively painless.

Botox is typically safe when administered by a licensed healthcare professional, like the team at Advanced Skin Therapy. The FDA originally approved it in 1989 for blepharospasm and other eye muscle problems, and in 2002, it was also approved for cosmetic treatments.
