AGE MANAGEMENT HORMONE PROGRAM

The first step in enrolling in the Age Management Program is to complete a questionnaire dealing with health history and various symptoms suggestive of hormone deficiencies. An initial appointment is then scheduled for an interview and to assess the intake forms. An initial examination may be performed then, optionally at the next visit. Blood is then drawn for a battery of tests to review general blood chemistries and hormone levels. A second appointment is then scheduled within one to two weeks to review the blood test results. Recommendations are then formulated based upon deficiency symptoms and hormonal blood levels. All major hormone levels are evaluated. Each patient then has the opportunity to decline or participate in hormone optimization. A six month commitment is required to attain hormone optimization with two or three blood draws over this time frame.

PURPOSE OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT

Scientific studies have shown that restoring hormone levels to those of younger years offers many benefits. These include slowing of age related changes, increased levels of energy and physical stamina, improved sexual function, improved mood, improvement in bone mineralization, and a reduction in the risk of breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and many degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s Disease. The issue of increased longevity is suggested but is still unanswered.

PROTOCOLS – STANDARD PROCEDURES

Only bioidentical hormones are dispensed. This simply means that the chemical structure of the hormones is identical to those hormones produced by our endocrine glands. Pharmaceutical companies cannot patent natural substances in nature, so non-bioidentical hormones are marketed by pharmaceutical companies, and commonly prescribed by many physicians. Non-bioidentical hormones were utilized in the Women’s Health Initiative study concluded in 2002 demonstrating an increase in breast cancer and cardiovascular disease in the postmenopausal women on these hormones. The opposite is true for bioidentical hormones. A unique hormone replacement program is then designed for each patient and discussed in depth. Prescriptions are dispensed for two months, and most all bioidentical hormones are available at local pharmacies. A follow-up appointment is then scheduled between one and two months for reassessment of hormone levels. Adjustments are then made for improved optimization of hormone levels. Most men are optimized by six months, and most women are optimized between six and nine months.

COSTS OF BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT

Blood tests and bioidentical hormones are covered through one’s health insurance much as such tests and prescriptions are ordered through one’s primary care physician. The medical costs of the program are $1,500 for six months, and an initial six month commitment is required due to the fluctuations in hormone levels as the process unfolds. This fee is required as a lump sum at the initiation of hormone replacement, less the $250 for the initial assessment. Dr. Olsson does not bill insurances, but super bills are provided for insurance submission under one’s individual policy guidelines for reimbursement for out of network providers. Super bills for the full $1,500 are then provided for over the six months of treatment to submit to one’s health insurer. Once optimization is achieved in six to twelve months, maintenance fees can commonly be reduced.
